Občanská válka skončila a Texas je okupován armádou Unie. Kapitán David Porter (Randolph Scott) je pověřen ochranou vládních úředníků při jednání s místními vlastníky pozemků. Těmto úředníkům ale nejde o nic jiného, než o zabrání farem a půdy původních obyvatel. Čestný kapitán Porter s jednáním vlastních lidí nesouhlasí a kloní se na stranu farmářů, za které bojuje Ben Westman (Charles McGraw). Situace se pro Portera ještě víc komplikuje problémy s podřízenými – arogantní kapitán Hodges (Lex Barker) si dovolí na jeho manželku.
