Detektiv Tad Gruzsa (L.Fishburne) potřebuje vyměnit s mexickými drogovými mafiány svého zajatého parťáka za americkou drogovou spojku Bobbyho Z . Problém tkví v tom, že Bobby je mrtvý, a tudíž k výměně nepoužitelný. Naštěstí se ve vězení nachází zlobivý hipík jménem Tim Kearney (P.Walker), který je Bobbymu neuvěřitelně podobný. A protože o jeho smrti ví zatím jen policie, rozhodnou se použít k výměně Tima. Pokud proběhne vše podle plánu, Tim získá svobodu. Situace se jim ovšem vymkne z rukou…
