Film podle stejnojmenného románu A. J. Cronina je kronikou ušlechtilého skotského muže Francise Chisholma (Gregory Peck). Jako dítě osiří, když jeho rodiče tragicky zemřou v důsledku protikatolické nenávisti v protestantském prostředí. Je vychován u svých příbuzných a mezi ním a dívkou Norou vznikne hluboký citový vztah. Po její nenadálé smrti se stane knězem. Jako misionář je vyslán do Číny, kde přes mnohé útrapy a překážky zakládá katolickou farnost.
