Příběh se odehrává v Číně během dynastie Tang (618-907). Vše začíná tím, že se ve městě Chang’an objeví černá démonní kočka, která naruší klid města svými krutými činy, což spouští řadu zvláštních událostí. Příběhem nás budou provázet dvě hlavní postavy Kukai (Shôta Sometani) a Bai (Xuan Huang). Kukai je japonský buddhistický mnich, který byl poslán během dynastie Tang do Číny, aby se dozvěděl o její civilizaci a naučil se tantrickému učení. Císařský písař Bai se rozhodne stát básníkem, a to ho dovede ke chtíči poznání pravdy dávného příběhu. Básník Bai Letian a mnich Kukai se společně pustí do vyšetřování 30 let staré události ohledně smrti konkubíny Yang (Brittany Falardeau). Vše se záhadně rozvíjí od chvíle, co se vydají po stopě, kterou po sobě zanechala démonní kočka, aby odhalili hluboko pohřbenou srdcervoucí pravdu.
