Režisér Albert Lewin natočil tento film jako variaci na slavný příběh o Bludném Holanďanovi. Děj se odehrává počátkem třicátých let dvacátého století v malém španělském přístavním městečku Esperanza (Naděje). Zde se objeví záhadný námořník Hendrick van der Zee (James Mason), jediný člověk na palubě své lodi. Do něj se zamiluje Pandora, krásná operní pěvkyně, která je zvyklá na obdiv a lásku mužů, ale sama je skutečně zamilovaná poprvé až do Hendricka. Brzy se dozvídá, že Hendrick není obyčejný muž a ani jejich láska nebude mít na růžích ustláno.
