Seržant Emmett Bell (Jeff Chandler) je velicí důstojník policie v indiánské rezervaci, kde udržuje klid a závazky mírové smlouvy. Jednoho dne dorazí na hranici rezervace armáda v čele s plukovníkem Edson Stedlowem (Willis Bouchey). Přes rezervaci totiž má vést cesta pro nové osadníky na severu země a plukovník má za úkol vybudovat pevnost a dohlížet na bezpečnost na této cestě. To se ovšem nelíbí indiánským náčelníkům vedených nejodvážnějším z nich, Kamiakinem (Michael Ansara).
