Zatímco letec Jeff Nolan ve vysoké výšce nad Zemí testuje nový typ vojenského letadla, dole pod ním neznámí útočníci použijí jedovatý plyn k téměř dokonalému vyhlazení všech živých bytostí. Po přistání se Jeffovi podaří najít několik dalších přeživších šťastlivců (mezi nimi milenci, kteří hledali soukromí ve vojenském krytu) a všichni se společně ubytují v jednom z prázdných domů. Když nedaleko od jejich bydliště spatří dvě podivné postavy ve skafandrech, je jim jasné, že na Zemi zaútočili agresivní návštěvníci z cizí planety. Nezbývá jim nic jiného, nežli se vyzbrojit a svést s nimi nerovný boj o planetu Zemi.
