Novinár Burke Devlin (Rock Hudson) sa rozhodne napísať článok o pilotoch, ktorí predvádzajú púťovú show. No keď sa zoznámi bližšie s rodinou vojnového hrdinu Rogera Shumanna (Robert Stack), začne ho príbeh týchto ľudí zaujímať ešte viac. Za show, pri ktorej im ide o život, dostávajú smiešne peniaze a tak žijú zo dňa na deň a bez strechy nad hlavou. Burke ich ubytuje vo svojom byte a popri tom sa zamiluje do Rogerovej manželky LaVerne (Dorothy Malone), ktorá je nešťastná v manželstve, kde najväčšou láskou jej manžela sú lietadlá.
